Find the book through Steam
To access the Official Companion, open Permafrost’s Properties in your Steam Library, check that the DLC is installed, then use Browse under Installed Files or Local Files to look for the book in the downloaded game files. Open the digital book with a reader that supports its file format.
Which purchase gives you the digital book?
Permafrost - Official Companion is a digital guide book containing survival tips and information about exploring the frozen world. It is available in English and German. The standalone Steam DLC requires ownership of Permafrost and does not include the base game.
| Purchase | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Standalone Official Companion DLC | The digital guide book; requires the base game, which is purchased separately. |
| Permafrost Companion Edition | The base game and the Official Companion digital book. |
| Permafrost Ultimate Edition | Everything in the Companion Edition, plus the Official Cookbook, original soundtrack and Permafrost novel. |
Check which purchase you already own before buying the book separately. If you bought the Companion Edition or Ultimate Edition, start with the installation steps below. If you are choosing a purchase, compare the included extras with what you want to read or listen to.
Open your installed Official Companion
- Open your Steam Library and find Permafrost to reach the game’s library entry.
- Right-click Permafrost and select Properties to open its installation and DLC settings.
- Select DLC and check that Official Companion appears as installed so you can look for its downloaded files.
- Choose Browse under Installed Files or Local Files to open Permafrost’s downloaded game files.
- Inspect the folders for a similarly named Companion or bonus-content folder to locate the digital book.
- Open the book with a reader appropriate to its actual file format to begin reading.
If you cannot find or open the book
- Return to the DLC panel and check the Official Companion installation entry before searching the folders again.
- Use Browse from Permafrost’s Properties to reach the downloaded game files instead of guessing an installation path.
- Check the book’s file format before choosing a reader; use software that supports the file you found.
The guide book, your dog and the other extras
The Official Companion is an external reference book, while your dog is a companion within the game who joins you through Dog Days. Scouting, carrying items and dog commands are base-game mechanics. You do not need to purchase the guide book to use them.
The Official Cookbook, Frozen Metropolis novel and original soundtrack are separate digital extras associated with Permafrost’s editions. The Ultimate Edition includes the Official Companion alongside those extras. If you want to read the survival guide, look for the Official Companion book when browsing your files.
